What Is WebP?
WebP is a modern image format created by Google that offers superior compression compared to older formats. It was designed to make websites faster by reducing image file sizes — typically 25–35% smaller than equivalent JPEG images at the same visual quality.
All major browsers support WebP natively: Chrome, Firefox, Safari (iOS 14+ and macOS Big Sur+), and Edge. Content platforms and web applications widely use WebP for images because it loads faster and costs less bandwidth.
Why Convert WebP to JPG?
Despite WebP’s advantages on the web, converting to JPG is often the right choice:
Universal compatibility. JPG has been an industry standard since 1992. Every device, operating system, photo viewer, editing tool, and online platform can open JPG files without any special setup. WebP, while widely supported in browsers, still encounters compatibility gaps in desktop software and older applications.
Photo editing workflows. Many photo editors — particularly older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, Affinity Photo, and specialized industry tools — have limited or no WebP support. JPG flows seamlessly into any photography or design workflow.
Sharing and email. JPG is universally understood. When sharing photos with family, clients, or colleagues who are not web developers, JPG ensures the file will open on the first try. Attaching a WebP to an email may leave Windows users with a file they can’t view.
Social media and platform uploads. While major social platforms support WebP in their web apps, uploading WebP files from desktop applications still produces inconsistent results. JPG is accepted everywhere without surprises.
Stock photography and print. Stock photo libraries, print services, and publishing workflows require JPG or TIFF. WebP is not accepted in these professional contexts.
Document production. Word processors (Microsoft Word, Google Docs), presentation tools (PowerPoint, Keynote), and PDF generators handle JPG images reliably. WebP support in document tools remains inconsistent.
JPG vs. PNG: Which Should You Convert To?
When deciding between converting your WebP to JPG or PNG, consider:
- Photos and images without transparency → JPG. JPG’s lossy compression is well-suited to photographs with smooth color gradients. File sizes are smaller than lossless PNG.
- Logos, icons, screenshots, or images with transparency → PNG. PNG is lossless and preserves sharp edges and transparency. JPG discards transparency (replacing it with white) and introduces artifacts on sharp geometric shapes.
- Archiving → PNG. For pixel-perfect archival, PNG’s lossless nature is preferable. JPG re-encoding degrades quality slightly with each save.

Tips for Best Results
- Transparent WebP files. JPG does not support transparency — transparent areas will be filled with white. To preserve transparency, use WebP to PNG instead.
- Quality for photos. 90% is the sweet spot for photographic content — visually lossless with reasonable file sizes. Only go higher if you need the file for print or further editing.
- Quality for illustrations. Vector-style illustrations and graphics with large flat color areas may show subtle banding at low quality settings. Use 90%+ for these.
