What Is AVIF?

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It is an image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), the same consortium behind the AV1 video codec used by Netflix, YouTube, and major streaming platforms.

AVIF offers exceptional compression efficiency — typically 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and often better than WebP. It also supports advanced features like HDR, wide color gamut, lossless compression, and full alpha channel transparency.

Browser support for AVIF is now widespread. Chrome has supported it since version 85 (2020), Firefox since version 93 (2021), and Safari since version 16.1 (2022). This makes AVIF an excellent choice for web images, but it creates compatibility issues when images are downloaded and used outside a browser.

Why Convert AVIF to PNG?

Desktop application compatibility. Most desktop image editors — older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Sketch, Figma desktop — do not support AVIF without plugins. PNG opens natively in every application on every platform.

Operating system compatibility. Windows 10 and earlier versions cannot open AVIF files without installing the AV1 Video Extension. macOS Monterey and earlier do not have built-in AVIF support. Converting to PNG eliminates these friction points.

Lossless editing workflow. PNG is a lossless format. If you download an AVIF from a website and want to edit it without further compression artifacts, converting to PNG first gives you a clean starting point.

Transparency preservation. AVIF can store alpha channel transparency. If you need to work with a transparent image in a tool that does not support AVIF, PNG is the universal lossless format with full transparency support.

Print and professional workflows. Print shops, stock photo platforms, and professional design pipelines typically require PNG, TIFF, or JPEG. AVIF is not yet accepted by most professional services.

Archiving. PNG has been a standard format since 1996. If you are archiving images for long-term access, PNG is a safer choice given its universal support across current and legacy software.

How This Converter Works

Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) can decode AVIF natively. pixconv.io takes advantage of this by:

  1. Loading your AVIF file using the JavaScript FileReader API.
  2. Creating an <img> element and setting its source to the AVIF data URL.
  3. Drawing the decoded image onto an HTML5 canvas element.
  4. Exporting the canvas as PNG using canvas.toBlob('image/png').
  5. Delivering the PNG file as a browser download.

The entire process happens in your browser. No data is uploaded to a server. No account is required.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — Go to the converter. You are already on pixconv.io/avif-to-png. The target format is set to PNG.

Step 2 — Add your AVIF files. Drag and drop one or more .avif files into the drop zone, or click Browse files to use your system’s file picker.

Step 3 — Conversion runs automatically. Each AVIF is decoded using your browser’s built-in AV1 decoder and exported as PNG. This typically takes under a second per image on modern hardware.

Step 4 — Download. Click Download next to each converted file. If you converted multiple files, use Download all as ZIP to grab them all at once.

Tips for Best Results

HDR AVIF files. AVIF supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) images with 10-bit or 12-bit color. Standard PNG is limited to 8 bits per channel (24-bit or 32-bit with alpha). When converting an HDR AVIF to PNG, the browser’s canvas will tone-map the HDR content to the standard dynamic range. If you need to preserve HDR data, use a desktop HDR-capable tool.

Large files. AVIF decoding can be memory-intensive for very large images. If you run into issues with extremely large AVIF files, try converting one file at a time rather than batch-processing.

Source quality. If the original AVIF used lossy compression (most AVIF images from websites do), the PNG will accurately capture what was in the AVIF — but any quality that was lost when the AVIF was originally encoded cannot be recovered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format with excellent compression — often 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. It supports HDR, transparency, and wide color gamut. It is increasingly used by major websites.

Why can’t I open AVIF on Windows?

Windows 10 and earlier do not include a native AVIF decoder. You can install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, or simply convert your AVIF to PNG using this tool, which opens everywhere.

Does converting AVIF to PNG lose quality?

No additional quality is lost during the PNG export step. PNG is lossless — it captures exactly what the AVIF displays. Any quality lost when the AVIF was originally compressed cannot be recovered, but the PNG output is faithful to the AVIF source.

Does this preserve AVIF transparency?

Yes. If the AVIF has an alpha channel, the PNG output will include it.

Can I batch convert AVIF files to PNG?

Yes. Drop multiple files and use the Download all as ZIP button when they are ready.

Does AVIF to PNG work on Mac?

Yes. The converter works in any modern browser on Mac — Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
