What Is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is one of the newest image formats available, standardized in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media. It is based on the AV1 video codec — the same open-source codec that powers high-quality streaming — repurposed for still images.

AVIF’s compression efficiency is impressive. It is typically:

AVIF also supports HDR (high dynamic range), wide color gamut, transparency, and animation. Major platforms like Netflix, Cloudflare, and Google Image Search serve AVIF images to browsers that support it.

Browser support for AVIF is growing but not yet universal:

While browsers handle AVIF well, software support outside of browsers is still limited — which is the main reason to convert AVIF to JPG.

Why Convert AVIF to JPG?

Desktop software compatibility. Most image editors — including older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Illustrator, Affinity Photo, GIMP, and nearly every specialized tool — do not yet support AVIF. JPG works in every piece of image software without exception.

Platform and CMS compatibility. Many content management systems, e-commerce platforms, and image upload tools have not yet added AVIF support. JPG is accepted everywhere, always.

Sharing and delivery. If you need to email an image, upload it to a form, send it to a client, or submit it to a service, JPG is the universally safe choice.

Print and publishing. Print shops, publishers, and document production workflows require JPG, TIFF, or PDF. AVIF is not accepted in professional print contexts.

Archiving accessible copies. Even if you keep the AVIF original for its compression benefits, having a JPG copy ensures the image remains accessible regardless of what software you use in the future.

How This Converter Works

pixconv.io converts AVIF to JPG using the browser’s native AVIF decoder and the Canvas API:

  1. Your browser decodes the AVIF image using its built-in AV1/AVIF decoder.
  2. The decoded pixel data is drawn onto an HTML5 canvas.
  3. The canvas exports the data as a JPG using canvas.toBlob('image/jpeg', quality).
  4. The JPG file is delivered to you as an immediate download.

Note: If your browser does not support AVIF (rare for modern browsers), the converter will report an error. In that case, try Chrome or Firefox.

All processing happens locally. Your files are never uploaded to any server.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — Add your AVIF files. Drag and drop one or more .avif files into the drop zone, or click “Browse files.”

Step 2 — Set quality. Use the quality slider to control JPG compression. The default of 90% produces excellent results for most images. Lower settings reduce file size at the cost of some quality.

Step 3 — Download. Click Download next to each converted file, or Download all as ZIP for multiple files.
