What Is HEIF?

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format. It’s a container format — a way of packaging image data into a file — rather than a compression method in its own right. HEIF itself doesn’t dictate how the image is actually compressed; that job belongs to a video codec chosen by whatever created the file.

The combination most people actually encounter is HEIF containing HEVC (H.265) video-codec-based image data — which is exactly what HEIC is. HEIC is simply the common name for a HEVC-coded HEIF file. If you’ve ever taken a photo on an iPhone running iOS 11 or later, it was very likely saved this way, just with a .heic extension instead of the generic .heif.

You’ll see the plain .heif extension on files from apps, cameras, or software that use the HEIF container without defaulting to Apple’s .heic naming. In the large majority of cases, these are still HEVC-coded under the hood, which means they behave the same way as HEIC files for conversion and compatibility purposes.

Think of HEIF the same way you’d think of a video container like .mp4: the extension tells you about the packaging, not necessarily what’s compressed inside. Most HEIF files you’ll ever open are HEVC-coded, but the standard technically allows other codecs too — including AV1, which this converter does not support.

If you’ve downloaded an image from a website, received a file from a non-Apple device, or exported an image from software that follows the HEIF standard’s generic naming rather than Apple’s branding, .heif is the extension you’re more likely to see. None of this affects how the image looks — it only affects which extension ended up on the file, and correspondingly, which software recognizes it on sight.

Why Convert HEIF to JPG?

Limited native support. Outside of Apple’s ecosystem and a handful of updated apps, most software has no built-in way to open a HEIF file. Windows, older Android devices, most browsers other than Safari, and a long list of desktop image editors simply don’t recognize it.

Sharing and uploading. Social media platforms, forums, stock photo sites, and most web upload forms expect JPG, PNG, or WebP. A HEIF upload will often fail outright or get silently converted server-side with unpredictable results.

Universal compatibility. JPG opens in essentially everything — every operating system, every browser, every image editor released in the last three decades. Converting removes any doubt about whether the recipient can open your file.

Print and professional delivery. Print shops and most professional workflows expect JPG, TIFF, or PDF. HEIF is rarely, if ever, accepted directly — submitting one to a print queue or a review workflow risks an outright rejection rather than a graceful fallback.

Archiving for the long term. JPG has been readable for decades and will remain so. If you want an image you can open on any future device without thinking about codec support, JPG is the safer long-term bet — a HEIF file depends on ongoing HEVC decoder support, which isn’t guaranteed on every platform indefinitely.

Consistency across a mixed photo library. If your photos come from multiple devices — some saving HEIF, others JPG or PNG — converting HEIF files to JPG keeps your library in one predictable, universally viewable format.

This converter supports HEVC-coded HEIF/HEIC files — the format used by iPhones and the large majority of HEIF files in circulation. It does not support HEIF files coded with the AV1 codec, which is effectively AVIF image data stored with a .heif extension; those files will fail to convert.
