What Is a PNG File?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format introduced in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Lossless means the file stores every pixel exactly as it was — no detail is discarded, no compression artifacts appear, and the image survives unlimited re-saves without degrading. PNG also supports an alpha channel, which is why logos, icons, and cutout images with transparent backgrounds almost always ship as PNG.

That fidelity has a cost: size. Because PNG refuses to throw anything away, photographic images stored as PNG are large — often five to ten times larger than the same photo as a JPG. JPG (or JPEG — two spellings, one format) is the pragmatic counterpart. It uses lossy compression tuned for photographs, discarding detail the eye will not miss in exchange for dramatically smaller files. Match the format to the content and the destination.

Keep PNG when the image contains sharp edges and flat color — screenshots with text, UI mockups, charts, diagrams, logos — or when transparency matters, or when the file is a master copy you will edit again. Lossy compression treats hard edges badly, and PNG’s exactness is worth its size for these images.

Choose JPG when the image is photographic and it is headed somewhere size-sensitive: an email, a web page, a form upload, long-term phone storage. For continuous-tone photos, JPEG at a sensible quality setting looks identical to the PNG at a small fraction of the size.

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
